Lt George Frederick Odell. c.c. April 1917. No 5 Telegraph construction company, 'L' Signal Battalion. R.E. |
| The 'L' Signal Battalion was a Great War
version of the GPO. Providing and maintaining the telephony infrastructure between armies.
Does anyone know where their War Diary resides, as I have been unable to locate one in the PRO. From Bert's letters, I know that George was heavily involved in the provision of telegraph pole routes, referred to as 'air lines'. He also spent some time at a 'Signal School' which is where the above photo was taken. Link to the letter that refers to this picture. letter 20_2_18.htm Educated at University of London, Kings College, George worked for the G.P.O. before the war in the city. George survived the war, and went on to re join the GPO, gaining quite an important position as Director of Contracts. He died in 1966.
